The production of lacquer ware is a traditional Burmese handicraft that was acquired from the Chinese in the fifth century.
On the frame of woven bamboo (or rattan, wood or woven horsehair) lacquer is coated layer by layer.
The following four designs are completely silver plated with silver leaf and gold leaf with 24 ct gold leaf and clear lacquered for protection :

In contrast to Thailand, where lacquer ware has become an eggshell gluing tourist attraction - in Myanmar / Burma the art of lacquer ware production is still made in the traditional manner. All Burmese honour these items of art and it uses were not only confined to royalty or the monkhood, but used by all Burmese.

The black plates below make the perfect wall decoration or under plates for dining. The rims are all silver plated or gold plated from silver and 24 ct. gold leaf and coated with clear lacquer for protection :

The variety of lacquer ware in Myanmar / Burma has no limits.
Many traditional uses were entire walls panelled, tables and other furniture to the smallest of boxes. The lacquer has always been important to Burmese life. It is practical, lightweight and can be used for just about anything whilst maintaining its charm of a time honoured traditional art handed down over generations :

The biggest challenge are round forms - the production of a big vase takes many months - but can be easily called the crown of lacquer ware.
In most instances a production takes around four months, because up to 15 coatings have to be applied and dried separately taking one to two weeks to dry between coats, depending on the season. Smaller urns are produced in different versions and designs some with coloured glass, mirrors and real gemstones such as ruby, emerald and sapphire set on them :
